About Us

It all started in 1897 when a young stock and station agent named John Archibald McGregor received a letter from a friend saying “Go west. There’s good country out here, good people, and opportunity.” And so he did. In 1897 stock and station agents JA McGregor & Co. was born in Warialda, NSW.

Over the years JA McGregor & Co. grew to become one of the most respected and well known agents in the North West. The business gradually expanding from a local stock and station agent, into machinery, agronomy, cropping inputs and farm merchandise, evolving 34 years ago into the innovative privately owned agribusiness we see today, McGregor Gourlay. The stock and station agency is still going strong, operating as JA McGregor Livestock & Property, offering livestock and real estate services. The broader McGregor Gourlay business now employs over 120 people across 13 branches located in the premier cotton, broadacre, sugar cane, horticulture and livestock regions of North West NSW, the NSW Northern Rivers and South West QLD Border Regions. In 1987, McGregor Gourlay started the water arm of the business based out of Warialda and today, combined with JA McGregor Livestock and Property, there are 18 staff on board with three of those focussing primarily on water. Mark Abra leads the water services team and started with the company over 25 years ago as a storeman. In his downtime you can often find him fishing - the Northern Territory would be his preference - and years ago you’d find him out on the touch footy field. Mark’s team at the Warialda store specialises in poly rainwater tanks, fittings and pumps specifically for stock and domestic markets. A typical day can see them covering a 400km round trip – from Coonamble to Barraba and Moree and if someone specifically asks, like a farmer in Armidale, they will head out there as well. Many of their customers come from word-of-mouth referral by family and friends, or people they may have dealt with over the years who have moved but still want the best service around. In recent years they have seen a big demand in Davey Firefighter pumps, especially during the peak bushfire period in 2019 in areas like Grafton and surrounds. Mark explains that McGregor Gourlay played a big part in the recently opened Warialda truck wash which serves one of the busiest transport routes in NSW, installing a Davey Monsoon IQ system. This wash facility will assist in removing effluent from stock trucks before they hit the road, a huge benefit to the Warialda community - keeping town streets and local roads clean. McGregor Gourlay look after both stock and domestic jobs on a typical day with household pressure and borehole pumps in demand. They have stocked Davey for well over 25 years.

“People come in asking for Davey pumps; they know and trust the brand. From our side of things, Davey offer us great support,” says Mark.
