About Us

Michael McCredie never intended to take over his dad’s business, Singleton Pump & Water – but the customers who have known him since he started helping out when he was 10 years old always knew it was his destiny.

“I started out helping with pump repairs in the shop in school holidays, then I’d be catching the bus there every day after school. I never really thought about taking on the business but looking back I think it was always going to happen. I think the customers knew I’d be running the place before I did,” says Michael, better known as Mick Junior even now, nearly 20 years after taking over from his dad, Mick Senior. Mick Jnr also did work experience with Davey in Sydney, which he laughingly accepts was another early clue about where his future would take him. Mick Snr opened Singleton Pump & Water in 1983 and Junior took over in 2002 – though he says he had been running the business about a year before then. “We never talked about it, I just started. Dad started travelling so I would just step up.” When Mick Jnr and his wife Kim took on the business, it was at a small rented premises, which they quickly outgrew. “We looked and looked for the right place and even moved house thinking we could keep some of the larger equipment at home,” Kim says.

“Eventually we found a place in a retail area which we bought about six years ago, and it was a really proud moment for us to know we had brought the business so far.”

Two years ago, a competitor business just around the corner from their new location moved out so they took that on, too. These days, the vast majority of the business’s customers are within a 50km radius of Singleton, though there’s an occasional job as far away as Newcastle. While they do a little bit of work with the local mines, most of their business is in rural/domestic and pool pumps. Mick Jnr says they sell pretty much every Davey product, though he has a soft spot for the HS50-06T and the HM90-13T pumps, which he says are just robust workhorses that his customers love. “Michael is very loyal and Davey has been good to us and our customers,” Kim says. “They support us with really good warranty back up and pricing that makes the product attainable, and that means we keep our customers.” Mick Jnr and Kim have a team of nine including themselves, their daughter Melinda and their daughter-in-law Clare.
